Phishing is when consumers that become a victim of identity theft, usually by fake websites, by giving their personal information on a site that pretend to be secure but it is not. Instead, it goes right to the hands of the people committing the fraud. This is then carried through by fake email or messaging. However, it is not as risky as giving your credit card to the waiter or cashier for a purchase. Always keep the receipt printouts or confirmation numbers when ordering online. Some other tips to make sure your credit card purchases online are secure is you can easily request to have emails or text messages sent to you after any purchases has been made, or if it is over a certain dollar amount. You can also request a second ID when making a credit card purchase face to face too. Getting a temporary credit card for making an online purchase is way of protecting your original card. Set up an account with PayPal and use it for account deposits and purchases. Always change your passwords frequently, use different passwords for different accounts, and make your passwords difficult or complex. Close out any unused credit card accounts that you do not use. Do not email your credit card number to anyone. Always monitor your debit and credit cards statements on a regular basis, to make sure that no one else has made a purchased. Look into your credit reports frequently they do make mistakes. If you have a wireless router, put a password on it to protect it.
